Kanji and Naoto's next mission takes them off the beautiful coasts of Cape Cod, and the chilly waters of the Atlantic beyond. Known for its prime fishing spots and vacation homes for the insanely rich, their interest in the water - although for reasons of investigation - are met by rumors by the locals, that of boats coming up against whales that sink their boats, and some don't even make it out alive. Local police didn't seem too keen on letting the kids pry much further, preferring to keep things quiet during a very important tourism rush for the summer, but upon revealing their representation of Shibusen, they're let in on the last three spots where bodies have washed up. Because of their need for numbers not only to keep an eye on fishermen to keep them alive AND to keep tabs on the rowdy tourists, their numbers are too thin to lend a boat to take their chances in the water.
However, the pair is in luck in finding a group of boaters who are willing to take on two extra passengers. Though the idea of the whales coming to find them gave them the willies, the idea of having a pair able to handle them gives them a bit of hope. Once out at sea, the boaters cast their lines, hoping to fish up dinner for the night, while the pair keeps their eyes peeled for their target, Naoto's transformation giving the boaters quite a show. Pleas to touch the gun are turned down by a surly Kanji, much to Naoto's relief.
The whales are easy to spot from far off, two in total, and the pair is ready. With the use of Naoto's gun form, damaging the barnacled hides of the whales is simple enough, baiting them closer to pump a few bullets into the soft flesh, but with further damage and pain comes the anger of a hungry, wounded beast. The boat is rocked and jostled, frightening the individuals aboard. Even if everyone wore their life vests, they wouldn't protect them from their souls being taken, much less getting pulled down and drowned by whale teeth. The first whale is destroyed through quick thinking, but the second is wily, jumping wholly out of the water and using the waves he creates to try and topple the watercraft. Though their resonance is strong and their fire a Megidolaon into the open mouth of the second lunging beast, the resulting splash is enough to topple the boat and send everyone over. Not wanting a repeat of the Loch Ness, Kanji keeps a firm hold on his partner, their resonance just enough to soothe any panic. With the evil presence gone, it was a matter of being pulled out of the Atlantic.
Fortunately the police presence was enough to spot the overturned boat, and each of the soggy seafarers are taken to shore to try and rest before making their report of success.
With dry clothes and mended spirits, the pair try their first lobster dish, and wind up taking a couple of frozen lobsters home to cook on another night. Kanji is also introduced to maple candy, and squirrels a stash away much to Naoto's dismay.
