FAQ - Souls
What are souls?
Souls are very important in Soul Eater, and therefore Soul Campaign. Souls are the manifestations or representations of a character's traits, personalities, and even abilities. It's affected by everything that a character is, especially the soundness of their minds and their physical state. Souls can seem like they have very human like facial features, like so.
Every character brought into the Soul Campaign universe receives a soul of their own, regardless of if their bodies do not contain souls in their canon or if they are not human. These souls will be a reflection of who or what they are like, just like normal.
Who can see souls?
While any meister and weapon can see a dead person's soul, only a select few can actually perceive them in a living being.
Currently, the NPCs that can use Soul Perception are Maka Albarn, Franken Stein, Ox Ford, Yumi Azusa, Death the Kid, Tsubaki Nakatsukasa, and Joe Buttataki (however, Joe is currently assumed as dead).
A particularly strong person is able to see certain aspects of a person’s personality through their soul, while a one-star or beginner can only sense the very basic energy. When this skill is trained, it takes no energy on the user’s part to see the souls of others; in the case of a beginner however, it takes a concentrated effort.
Meisters will be allowed to request this ability in their applications, however, you must have a canon reason for having it. This is a rare skill - not everyone will be allowed this ability.
For the purpose of keeping Soul Campaign's character pool from acquiring more than one skill at a time, only characters with the meister ability Soul Perception or weapons whose skills are specifically meant for the identification of souls can do this.
What kinds of souls are there?
There are as many souls as there are people. No one’s soul will be the same, as they are a direct reflection of the person. However, with very few exceptions, there are three basic types of souls:
Human Souls: These are the most common. Meisters and Weapons possess human souls, as do the innocent bystanders of the world. The strength of their souls may vary, but at the heart of it all, they are human.
Kishin Eggs: These are the souls of the corrupted. They have broken the unwritten law and devoured human souls, becoming the seeds of the next Demon God. If they continue along this path, they will become the next Kishin. These souls are harvested by Meisters of Shibusen to prevent that from happening.
Witch’s Souls: As it sounds, these are the souls of witches. They are very powerful, and can be detected by Meisters with the Soul Perception ability. Over the ages, some witches have developed a spell called ‘Soul Protect’ to disguise themselves. Meisters are required to obtain one of these souls in order to forge their weapon into a Death Scythe.
How do you collect souls?
The most common method will be through accepting missions. There will be a board posted with various mission ads that you and your partner may accept.
Souls will also be available through special events – they will be announced ahead of time on the out of character community. Here is the current Soul Tally of the characters in the game.
If a person has a split personality, would this be shown in their soul?
The soul can take on different appearances depending on which personality is currently present, as long as the features don't vary too much from each other. A change in expression, or the perking up or dropping of other features (like hair or ears), is acceptable. As long as they both follow the guidelines for how a soul should look (explained in the application section), this will be allowed.
Please note that a separate entity that resides in your character does not count as a split personality. If a person(s) can justifiably be considered separate from your character, they will be ejected by BREW.
What if my character has two or more souls in his body, like in the case of being possessed or having a parasite in them?
The BREW will automatically eject a second soul from the character's body regardless of how fused they are to each other in canon. We only allow one soul to be brought into the game per body.
However, we understand that players may want to use the second soul or the parasite as a means to forward character development. The common fix for this should the player want to retain an aspect of it for character development is to turn the second persona into either a split personality, or as imagined voices in their heads. The game frequently exposes its characters to the Madness Wavelength, which brings out the 'madness' in a person (in most cases, fear or anger) and their accompanying baggage.
