FAQ - Partnerships

Why should I have a partner?

Both Weapons and Meisters become more powerful when they have a partner. Their wavelengths are amplified, particularly in the case of Meisters, and they are able to perform Resonance Attacks. While some Weapons are capable of partially shifting into their weapon form (such as Soul’s arm scythes), they are noticeably weaker like this than when they are being used by a Meister.

Technically, a Meister or Weapon can work solo if they so wish, but it is not advised. One-star meisters or beginner weapons are practically useless against kishin eggs on their own. Regular weapons, unless enchanted by some means, have little to no effect on Kishin and Witches.

Most school assignments, missions, and excursions will be organized to accommodate partners before singles, as teamwork is highly encouraged by Shibusen and the nature of their enemies.

How are partners chosen?

You choose your own partner. Partnerships require both members of the team to resonate, meaning that there must be a bond between them. If the pairs were assigned, they would not have the same dynamic and likely would not function well as a team.

Don’t worry, there will be several opportunities to meet possible matches and if you find that your partnership isn’t working out, you may choose to work with a different Weapon/Meister.

How do I choose a partner?

Choosing a partner is a very individual experience. There are no set guidelines or traits to look for – it’s very much like choosing a partner in a romantic relationship. You have to select someone whose traits compliment your own.

One thing to keep in mind is that this is not as simple as friendship - just because you manage to get along with someone does not mean you are fit to be partners. Some partnerships work better together with conflict, while others work better between two peaceful people. While disagreements can and will happen, the bond between partners is something much stronger than that. You must trust each other with your lives, and be able to work together despite any differences you may have.

This is an important decision, and not one that is meant to be rushed – there will be plenty of time and opportunity to choose a partner who is right for you. Once you have selected a partner, report your decision here in the Partner Directory.

My partnership isn't working out. May I change?

If you truly feel that your partnership is not a good match, don’t fret. You may choose to change your partner, but remember this is not a decision to be made lightly. Please make sure that both parties are clear about separating.

Partners have the option to approach Shibusen staff or any of the more veteran partnerships in the game and ask for help. Remedial lessons with the Shibusen students or professors can be arranged in the form of a log in an attempt to salvage the partnership, which may or may not work.

In the case of a dropped partner, you will be allowed to search for a new one immediately.

What is Resonance?

In order for a Meister to wield a Weapon, their souls must resonate – which basically means to ‘harmonize.’ Souls that resonate are able to synchronize their wavelengths so that they may function as one team and their wavelengths become one. This allows them to sense each other’s reactions and combine forces to perform even more powerful attacks or more extraordinary feats. A Weapon who is properly resonating with their Meister should be able to know their mood, their heart rate and other vital status, as well as other basic knowledge; this is by no means a psychic link, but it should allow partners to see the general ‘aura’ of their partners current state.

If the resonance is off, just as if two cogs do not align in a machine, teamwork becomes impossible. A Meister will not be able to pick up or use a Weapon if their soul wavelengths are not matching, making the relationship between two partners extremely important. If a partnership begins to fall apart, Meisters may find that their weapon feels heavier or doesn’t react with the speed they normally do – or in extreme cases, may even burn their hands or cause other painful reactions.

At very good resonance, the partners may even communicate in their thoughts, making for even faster reaction time.

What is a Resonance Attack?

Different partners have skills or ace attacks that they achieve during perfect resonance (usually after a long partnership with someone). These attacks are a symbol of the partnership’s advanced synergy and are formed based on the abilities of both Meister and Weapon together. This isn’t decided during application period: send us a note when your Weapon and his/her Meister achieve a bond deserving of a Resonance Attack!

My partner and I have an idea for a Resonance Attack! What do we do?

Please send us a proposal of your attack to our email (soulcamapaign@gmail[dot]com) so that we can look it over!

What is Team Resonance?

Just as two partners must resonate, there is such a thing as ‘team resonance.’ This is an advanced technique, far beyond the skill of those who are new to wielding Weapons; however, it is extremely useful in battle situations.

It allows a larger team made up of multiple sets of partners (typically two or three pairs) to synchronize their souls and unleash stronger wavelength attacks. They draw off the power of each other’s souls, making Resonance Attacks easier to use more frequently (ie. Witch Hunter, Death Cannon, etc.) and more powerful.

This will not be covered by professors until they feel that students are ready to tackle more challenging lessons.

Can there be Weapon/Weapon and Meister/Meister partnerships?

While Meister/meister partnerships are not possible, weapon/weapons ones are. One weapon that hasn't transformed can wield another weapon. For the same-class partnerships to work the people either have to be related, such as in the case of the Thompson sisters, or have very, very similar wavelengths. However, forming a same-class partnership is discouraged. Using the amplifier and the guitar example, two amplifiers will not make a sound just like two weapons will not be able to use resonance attacks. You might be able to use another weapon, but you won't be able to fight with the same potential as a meister/weapon partnership.

Can a Meister wield two Weapons?

This is possible in special cases, such as when the Weapons are particularly close, as in the case of the Thompson twins or the Pot of Fire and Pot of Thunder twins. This is very difficult to achieve because resonance between three people is naturally more complex to handle than resonance between two; the moment someone is not synchronized with the other two, resonance will fail.

Are characters forced to move in together once they resonate and become partners?

In the case of the characters brought in by the BREW, Shibusen does not force them to move together at all, though it is highly encouraged. Moving together allows the pair to work and be with each other in situations other than battle, which can either help them achieve better resonance or determine if they really do want to stay partners.
